The River Hills Lions Club has expanded its Roaring Readers program for school children to include “Learning Trees” and have planted the first four red maples on the campus of Kinard Elementary School in Clover. The tree planting carries out a theme of Lions International President Wing-Kun Tam of China.
Lions have been distributing books to second, third and fourth grade children and will add the fifth grade next year. CJ and Katzy Nager who head the program said the idea is to make sure that each child will own a book or books. Children select their own books, identifying it with a bookmark. To encourage children, Lions also participate in lunch buddies, reading mentors and health screening projects.
The red maples will mark a trail on the school campus that leads to an outdoor classroom constructed as a Boy Scout Eagle project. A plaque with a quotation from the poem, “Trees,” by Joyce Kilmer” will be presented to Principal Kathy Weathers this summer.
