-One child in four is born with a vision or hearing problem
-Children rarely are aware of their vision or hearing problems
-Children with profound sight or hearing impairments usually function at lower grade levels than their unaffected peers.
-Early detection is essential

Hearing and vision are the main senses needed for the basic skills to survive in life. Approximately 90% of children who experience learning difficulties suffer from one or more problems with their eyesight. Far too often, these problems remain undiagnosed, causing a great deal of needless frustration for children and their parents.
It is well recognized that hearing is critical to speech and language development, communication, and learning. Children with listening difficulties due to hearing loss or auditory processing problems continue to be an under-identified and an underserved population.
On Thursday, September 25th the River Hills Lions screened over 155 9th grade students at Clover High School for visual and hearing acuity, helping the school nurse meet the South Carolina directive to screen the entire 9th grade for visual acuity. On Friday, September 26th the SC Lions Charitable Services Health Screening Unit (HSU) and volunteers from the River Hills Lions were able to provide the visual and hearing acuity test for 165 students. With the help of the Jr. High School nurse; however, another 100 students were visually screened. The student total for the 2 day screening was 420 students.

River Hills Lions and head nurse, Gale Stewart are already planning next year’s visit of the HSU for the 2009-2010 school year. For more information or to join us as our guest at our October 18; 8 AM breakfast meeting at the River Hills Country Club, call Lion President Dona Van Leer 803-631-3543 for details or go to http://www.riverhillslions.org .

The net income of $58,000 was up from $56,000 last year, $54,000 two years ago and $46,000 in 2004. 100% of the net proceeds are used by the Lions Club to provide assistance for needy causes in our community. Some of the local charities we support are the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department, Clover Area Assistance Center (CAAC), CAAC-Dental, People Attempting to Help (PATH), Clover High School Scholarships, River Hills/Lake Wylie Emergency Squad, River Hills Lions Sight and Hearing, Stuff Unlimited, Safe Passage, Camp Thunderbird, York Adult Day Care, Hospice, York Place, Teen Health Center, Clover High School Choraliers and the Clover Community Theatre.

The production of the Directory takes a full 8 months and a total of 74 Lions Club members participated in the various phases of this year’s project under the guidance of Lion Ken Shaffer-Chair, Lion Bob Daily-Sales Manager, Lions Bill Martin & Richard Doescher-Census Managers, Lion Gene Berres-Prospecting Manager and Lion Ken Shaffer who was technically supported by J. Cooper Rose, handled the record keeping. Distribution was handled by Lions John Cathcart, Don Meyer, Drew Naber, J. P. Russell, Ken Shaffer and Sandy Shaffer. The sales team captains were Lions Burt Burton, Ralph Byra, Bob Daily, Dave Decker, Pat Duffy, Jack Haher, R. J. Phillips, Russ Snader and Bob Tarte.

Most of the directory income is derived from the sale of advertisements. We encourage each of you to support our advertisers by using the Yellow Pages to find sources of goods and services. The front cover of this year’s Directory was designed by Cletus Hardy of River Hills, who used a rainbow of bright pastel colors, falling raindrops and photos of community scenes to portray the theme: RIVER HILLS – THE TREASURE AT THE END OF THE RAINBOW. WHY LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE?

A special thanks to all of our advertisers – because of you, we are able to help thousands of needy people in our community.
