Adversity strikes everyone! – President’s Report

There are 1.35 million Lions members worldwide! Why so inviting? Adversity strikes everyone!

Helen Keller put it this way: “All the world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming.” Remember, Annie Sullivan, Helen Keller’s teacher? Annie helped Helen free herself from isolation and provided support for Helen to develop her own gifts. In turn, Helen, in the 1920’s, inspired the fledgling Lions organization to commit to its initial “Knights of the Blind” mission. While combating blindness remains a priority, Lions “pay forward” as needed to help worldwide “neighbors” overcome misery and live greater joy!

Today, our River Hills Lions continue modeling that same service commitment. In October, through Dona Van Leer and company’s collaboration with the SC Lions Health Screening Unit, 446 students in two local middle schools were screened for vision and hearing acuity. In November, through CJ and Katzy Nager’s organizing, our Lions provided three grades of local elementary school students with 200 free books, the first of three scheduled offerings to students for whom book ownership would remain otherwise unlikely. Our Christmas Tree Sales effort saw Bob Daily & Company working long hours to raise funds for our charities budget.

Lion Peg Stoklas & Crew organized a memorable Holiday Party, at which the performance by the youngsters from the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind added a poignant reminder of human courage, creativity and will. The event also provided opportunity to honor special Lions for their special leadership gifts. Dick Pastor led the Pancake Breakfast crew to provide another chapter of Holiday joy for local youngsters and their families. Sandy Decker led Christmas caroling that gave joy to the residents of the Lake Wylie Assisted Living Facility.

Remember, our January Directory Sales and New Lion Orientation offer service and learning opportunities. Meanwhile, educational, sight and hearing services as well as future event planning continues. Offer your ideas and help!

Lions appeal? In helping others overcome adversity with love’s giving touch, Lions increasingly show how humanity can choose survival. Today, please invite others to help Lions model leadership by humbly answering adversity’s challenge.

Be well!

Lion President, Frank
