Dear Fellow Lions,
Please join us for the”2009 Walk to Cure Diabetes on April 18 at Carowinds. This is the 10th year that the Lions have participated in the Walk and this year is extra special for us as we are walking in honor of two local residents. Ashley Pettus, a 5th grader who has had diabetes for the past 5 years and Matthew Kuehler, a 6th grader who was diagnosed with diabetes in August of 2007. We are also walking in memory of Matthew’s cousin, Max Corrada who died last month from complications of diabetes.
To sign up on line click here. You don’t need to walk but doing this will allow you to send emails to your friends requesting a contribution to JDRF in your name and for River Hills Lions.
Diabetes researchers are slowly getting closer to one of their biggest goals: creating an artificial pancreas. The diabetes community has long awaited the announcement that researchers have “closed the loop” by fully automating insulin delivery to mimic the function of a normal pancreas. The development of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in the last few years was a major step in that direction. Now, the challenge remains to coordinate the CGM sensor and insulin pump technologies so that they work in tandem as a completely automated system. In other words, they now need the pump to be able to turn itself “off” when not needed.
With your help this can happen! Please support us in our efforts to find a cure for this debilitating disease. Last year we raised 150% of our $7,000 goal! Let’s do it again. Just think, based on our membership of approximately 157 Lions, if each of us mailed 10 letters and received an average donation of $10, we would raise $14,200 – more than twice our goal…… Wow!
We need your help. You can help even if you can’t walk on April 18. The attached Instruction Sheet shows you how. We will keep track of your donations, give you updates of the monies collected and write personal thank you letters for you to send to your donors.
A cure for this disease is within our sights. This could be the year and YOU could make the difference!
