By being part of the Lions Strutters Team (SC & NC Lions Clubs) and participating in your local JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) Walk, you can help cure diabetes, get great publicity for your club and increase your membership. The Lions have been participating in the Walk to Cure Diabetes since 1999 and have raised over $183,000 for diabetes research.
Diabetes researchers are slowly getting closer to one of their biggest goals: creating an artificial pancreas. The diabetes community has long awaited the announcement that researchers have “closed the loop” by fully automating insulin delivery to mimic the function of a normal pancreas. The development of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in the last few years was a major step in that direction. Now, the challenge remains to coordinate the CGM sensor and insulin pump technologies so that they work in tandem as a completely automated system.
JDRF is proud to say that more than 85% of their expenditures go directly to research and education about research. They are witnessing significant research progress. After more than 37 years, they can now confidently state that, for the first time ever, a cure for Type 1 diabetes is not only possible, but likely.
If we all work together as the Lions Strutters, we can help cure diabetes. For details contact Lion Sandy Decker 803-831-8227 and your local JDRF Headquarters in Florence & Columbia, SC 803-782-1477, Greenville & Greenwood, SC 864-770-0276 or Charlotte, NC 704-561-0828
This is our opportunity as Lions, to become well-known in our own communities and to encourage others to join our clubs. We are one of the best kept secrets! Let’s let the secret out and let everyone know what thoughtful, caring citizens we are and let’s raise a lot of money for diabetes research!
